Udaan Ghar

Khushi...class iv, Sita...vi, Anita...ix, Hashina...vi.... C/O Udaan Ghar…a home away from streets and home... This is one of our early initiatives taken 11 years ago…The residents of Udaan Ghar are mostly from streets, broken and marginalized families. This is a shelter for girl children at risk. Empowerment Dream Programme (EDP)

Since 2004 Project Crayons has set up an EDP (Empowerment of Dreams Program) intervention in the Malwani slum area in Malad West and MHADA colony Andheri East, Mankhurd community and Deonar where most of the students are from marginalized families. The EDP is a sponsorship and scholarship program which today is supporting 1200 children and helping them continue their education in their respective schools. EDP also provides School Fees. Rs. 3500/- per child annually & educational accessories too. Our support is an intervention with the school and with regular home visits with the children, wherein there is proper utilization of the finances which is directly beneficial to the children. School on Wheels (SOW)

School on Wheels (SOW) is Project Crayons innovative initiative that provides education for drop outs and out of school children at their door step. This is a mobile school bus converted into a classroom that engages with communities to provide education through participatory and interactive methods. Through the Leadership Paathshala we aim to deliver holistic education and mainstream each student in formal English medium schools. Our Community Leadership Centre provides continuous support to teachers and students who graduate from the Leadership Paathshala and enter formal schools. Community Area Resource centers (ARCs)

Since October 2007, Project Crayons initiated this program in the region of North East Mumbai in Mankhurd. The area having a high number of small scale industries in the slums is a haven for child labour. We selected a small group of 200 tenements in the MHADA – PMGP COLONY, wherein we did a survey of each family. Most of the target group consisted of pavement dwellers that have been relocated by the government in the redevelopment metro project. Aastha

Mumbai has a population of almost 15 million; the 1991 census found 9.9 million lived in Greater Mumbai, of which as many as .5 million live on the streets. Most of them are below the poverty level. Health is a priority but not accessible easily. There are cases of deaths due to untimely medical interventions. Aastha is a HOPE for the homeless, especially children on the streets. This hope will be available at all times for the poor. Future Projects

Through the present program (Udaan Ghar) we can support girl children up to the age of 18yrs. We cannot provide them shelter after that age. It is crucial that these young girls get our services in a consistent manner without interruption in their progress. The Young Women’s Welfare Centre is an upcoming project that will provide for girls 18 plus and provide this continuity in fostering brilliant women for our future... read more
